Alongside production of energy via renewable sources we also need to be putting significant effort into methods of reducing energy consumption. One area where this is becoming more practical is lighting.
Most people are aware that the standard light bulb consumes a fair amount of energy relative to the light it emits (often the energy is converted into heat more effectively than light). Then fluorescent tubes were invented which reduce the energy required for the same amount of light (but it is definitely a ‘cold’ light which most people would feel uncomfortable with in their homes, other than in functional areas like kitchens or garages).
In recent years the LED light has become a practical alternative. One version is the GU10 LED light bulb which is used to replace a 240V mains powered equivalent halogen bulb at a significantly lower energy consumption.
